Jewelry with a conscience: keeping it sustainable

Jewelry with a conscience: keeping it sustainable

The world is ever-evolving, but we've wreaked a lot of damage on it in the process. That's why, as a jewelry maker, I put sustainability at the heart of everything I create. I make jewelry that is as kind to the planet as it is unique and beautiful. By using recycled metals and ethically sourced stones, I aim to minimize my environmental impact while supporting fair labor practices.

One of the most impactful ways to make jewelry sustainable is by using recycled metals. Traditional metal mining is a resource-intensive process that contributes to deforestation, pollution, and unethical labor practices. I either buy recycled sterling silver or recycle my scraps of sterling and gold in my studio.

Recycled metals maintain the same quality and durability as newly mined metals. As well, many refineries now specialize in eco-friendly refining processes, further reducing environmental harm.

The diamond and gemstone industry has long been associated with environmental and ethical concerns, from destructive mining practices to exploitative labor conditions. Luckily, a growing movement toward ethical sourcing is changing that situation.

Ethically sourced stones are mined or lab-grown with minimal environmental impact and under fair working conditions. I use ethical suppliers who offer traceable stones and adhere to fair trade principles. I've also used lab-grown diamonds and gemstones, which offer the same brilliance as mined gems but come without the ethical and ecological drawbacks. Another sustainable practice is to repurpose gemstones from older jewelry pieces in new designs.

These types of sustainable choices, plus using eco-friendly packaging made from recycled materials. are being adopted by more and more jewelers. And environmentally conscious consumers like you are making a difference with your jewelry choices. Opting to work with jewelers who use sustainable practices can leave a sparkling legacy!
